We are equipped with an excellent colour Doppler ultrasound machine in the hospital.  This is an invaluable diagnostic technique for our clinicians.  Many conditions, including bladder stones, effusions around the heart, lungs or abdominal cavity, tumors within the liver and other organs, can be diagnosed using ultrasound.

In addition we have a visiting Specialist who can carry out ultrasounds with a level of skill gained only through years of study and practice. This is available to our own clients, as well as for referral cases from other practices.

Ultrasound is a painless, non-invasive procedure that allows us to visualize internal structures in real time.  Ultrasound can also be used to guide us in obtaining samples from certain organs. We often will use it in conjunction with other imaging techniques, such as X-ray or CT scan.

To obtain an ultrasound we need to clip hair from the area to be scanned.  Most scans can be done on a fully conscious animal.  However, if they are anxious or hyperactive, they may need a light sedation to keep them still.
